Can My Logo Be a Custom Pocket Shape?
What to Consider when Designing
At Well Stated Clothing, our USA state-shaped pockets are more than a design choice—they are a conversation starter. But because they look so unique, we often get asked the same question: “Is that an actual pocket, or just a patch?”
It is a real, functional pocket. We pattern, cut, and stitch every one to ensure it can hold the essentials— a pen, a business card, or a tube of chapstick. The novelty lies in the fact that it works, even if the shape is entirely unconventional.
Once a client realizes the pocket is functional, the next question is usually: “Can you do my logo or my mascot?”
The answer is almost always yes. Most mass-produced pocket tees use a standard “shield” shape because that is what the factory’s automated jigs are programmed to fold. Because we are a fully custom operation, we have the flexibility to break that mold. Your pocket can be a mascot, a company logo, or even another shape, provided it meets a few basic structural requirements.
The “Open-Top” Rule
For a pocket to stay taut and look professional, it needs a stable opening. This is why shapes with a flat top edge (like Arkansas) or a “scooped” concave top (like Ohio) work so well.
If a shape is completely rounded or pointed at the top, the fabric has nothing to “hang” from, which leads to the pocket sagging or curling away from the shirt. However, even difficult shapes often have hidden solutions. For example, the state of Texas seems like a challenge, but by using the flat, northern “stovepipe” as the opening and sewing down the remaining jagged edges, we create a pocket that is both recognizable and perfectly functional.
Design Alignment
When designing your pocket, we suggest keeping your artwork entirely inside or entirely outside the pocket boundary. Trying to “bridge” a print or embroidery element across the seam of the pocket rarely results in a clean look. The transition over the hem creates an uneven surface that prevents the artwork from laying flat or looking crisp.
By keeping the design elements distinct, we ensure the final product looks like a high-end retail piece rather than a DIY project.
The “Hidden” Detail
Because we manufacture the garment panels before they are sewn together, we can offer details that local print shops struggle to replicate. One of our favorites is printing underneath the pocket.
Imagine a school mascot peeking out from behind a state-shaped pocket, or a hidden brand message that is only visible when you look inside. Because we print the fabric before the pocket is attached, the result is seamless and perfectly aligned— a level of detail that is nearly impossible to achieve on a pre-made shirt.
Beyond the Pocket
While custom pockets are our specialty, they are just one way to customize your order. If you have an idea for a fully sewn-down appliqué patch, unique embroidery placements, or specific fabric blends, we are here to help you navigate those choices.
Our goal is to help you build a garment that people actually want to wear. If you have a shape in mind, let’s look at the geometry together and make it Well Stated.
